Austin-born Joseph Anthony Somers-Morales released new YouTube videos on Sundays in 2012 of himself singing covers of songs by artists like Chris Brown, Drake, and The Weeknd. His series gained more than 50 million views on YouTube, and Republic Records took notice.
Under the stage name SoMo, Somers-Morales had already released an independent mixtape and headlined an independent national tour. But since signing with Republic Records, he’s charted with his single “Ride” in November of last year, and released a self-titled debut album in April. He has also appeared on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz, The Arsenio Hall Show, and BET’s 106 & Park.
The 27-year-old’s father was in a jazz rock band called Duck Soup that played at popular clubs in Austin, and now he’ll follow in his father’s footsteps. SoMo brings his Wide Awake tour to Emo’s on Tuesday. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $23 in advance/$25 day of show. A VIP Meet and Greet package is also available for $125.
