Thanks to our mild Southern winter, this year promises a season of plentiful and well-priced mudbugs. What better day to celebrate our wealth of crawfish than New Orleans’ favorite holiday, Mardi Gras? Two of Austin’s Cajun eateries are boiling up large batches of the stuff on Tuesday with live music, beads, and plenty of Abita. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
From 4 p.m.-9 p.m., Stuffed Cajun Meat Market (5207 Brodie Lane #125) helps put the “fat” in Fat Tuesday with their authentic NOLA favorites like gumbo, boudin, and of course, crawfish. Live music performances during the feast include swamp band The Mighty Pelicans and electric blues guitarist Harry Bodine. They’ll close the night with a costume contest and king cake.
Two hours later and a few minutes east, Sweetwater (730 W Stassney Ln) holds their own Mardis Gras get-together with music from Gumbo Ce Soir and Jimmie Dreams. They’ll be serving smoked sausage and fresh boiled crawfish, and representatives from Abita and Bacardi will be on hand with some possible freebies. The party runs from 6 p.m.-2 a.m.
