Saturday, May 2 is Derby Day! Whether you want to head to a party for the race or just want to watch and sip a mint julep in the privacy of your own home, we have you covered.

Derby in the City

Pull out your big hats and dapper attire to watch the Kentucky Derby on a jumbotron in the Austin American-Statesman’s very own parking lot at this party. The derby won’t be the only entertainment, as Shakey Graves, Leftover Salmon, Whiskey Shivers and more perform live. Tickets are $25 for general admission from 1 to 10 p.m., or $100 for VIP access, which includes complementary food, private toilets, and more.

For more Kentucky Derby Parties, download the Austin360 app and check out the special category, or head to our events database.

From the bar at drink.well, here’s a recipe for a classic mint julep you can make in the comfort of your own home:

2 oz Bourbon or Cognac

.5 oz of Simple Syrup

6-8 Mint Leaves

Gently muddle the mint leaves with the syrup in a julep cup. Add the spirit snd crushed ice. Swizzle until the cup begins to frost. Top with additional crushed ice and garnish with a generous sprig of fresh mint.

And for a twist, try drink.well’s Roseto Julep:

1.5 oz Bonded Bourbon

.5 oz Amaro Montenegro

.5 oz Simple Syrup (equal part sugar and water)

.25 oz Combier Rose

Mint Garnish

In a julep cup place 6 mint leaves and add .5 oz simple syrup. Gently muddle the mint and sugar. Add 1.5 oz bourbon, .5 oz Montenegro, .25 oz rose liqueur and crushed ice. Swizzle until side of the cup is cold and frosty. Top off with more crushed ice. Garnish with mint sprig and add straw.
