Thanksgiving means a few things: the president will pardon some turkeys, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will continue to amuse and terrify with its huge balloon characters and family bonding time probably will wear you out. Family time is wonderful, but sometimes you need to take a breather from all the food and any family drama. Here are a few suggestions for you to get away this Thanksgiving weekend.
Wake up early and do the Turkey Trot. A classic Thanksgiving activity that gets you out of the house in the morning and on the right foot. Not only are you kick-starting your metabolism before dinner, you’ll be helping raise money for charity.
Go Christmas tree shopping together. We may start planning for Christmas right after Halloween, but if you want to give Thanksgiving its due, you probably haven’t bought a Christmas tree yet. Why not start right after the holiday ends? Elgin Christmas Tree Farm opens the day after Thanksgiving and will sell trees until Dec. 21. Dogs are welcome.
Do a street musical performance to practice for your Salvation Army Santa gig. Every year, we see smiling volunteers ringing a bell, saying hello and thanking people for any donations they stuff into the traditional Salvation Army red kettle in front of stores. The organization is looking for musicians to perform while collecting donations this year. The Salvation Army is requesting performers from Nov. 25 through Dec. 24, at The Domain, Barton Creek Mall and Lakeline Mall. If you need a rehearsal before playing in public, grab your guitar or tambourine and do a few songs for people downtown.
Wander a museum or two. While museums won’t be open on Thanksgiving Day, if you fall asleep early and get a good night’s rest, the next day you’ll be reinvigorated for a day to stroll through some exhibitions. The Harry Ransom Center opens its doors 10 a.m. on Nov. 25, and the current exhibition showcases renowned photographer Elliot Erwitt’s work throughout his career.
Take a walk to trot off that turkey. Overeating is a classic American holiday tradition. While it’s tempting to fall asleep right after you finish that last slice of pumpkin pie, putting on a sweater and leaving the house for a few circles around the block will make you feel less groggy for the rest of the night. Plus, a walk has the customization options of either bringing family along, or taking a break from too many people talking to you at once. If you want to add philanthropy to your after-dinner exercise, consider visiting Austin High School’s track for a jog and donating to their renovation costs.
